After getting an invitation to the movie, Unfrosted, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to make Pop-Tarts from scratch. My friend, who often toasts one for breakfast at work, had a movie night to watch the comedy directed by Jerry Seinfeld.
The menu was pizza, salad and BYOPT (bring your own Pop-Tarts). I said we were bringing strawberry, but didn’t specify they would be homemade.
Rem and I are fans of Claire Saffitz Dessert Person videos and had enjoyed her Gourmet Makes segments when she was at Bon Appetit. We re-watched the original version and then the Gourmet Remakes, a pandemic version she did from home during the shutdown.
Both are worth watching, but the second one is the best. She is on Zoom with her crew, and some of her colleagues from the Bon Appetit kitchens make cameo appearances.
She also invites viewers to try the Pop-Tart recipe at home and at the end there is a montage of home-bakers and their toaster pastries that is fun and heartwarming to watch. The BA crew expected a few dozen people would send in their videos and were surprised that almost 900 did!
I wanted to do the whole thing: the pastry and frosting, of course, but also the filling and yes, even the sprinkles.
I spread the project out over three days, and it didn’t feel overwhelming.
There are a lot of steps and it took time and patience. It was challenging, but also enjoyable and I was so glad I went for it. I feel if your going to make Pop-Tarts from scratch, you may as well go all out.
My friends were wowed by the delicious, warm Pop-Tarts, that like the movie, were sweet and colorful.
Thank you for your visit. This is post 38 out of 60 in my 60 New Things Project. Here is the recipe to make your own homemade Pop-Tarts.
